Oriel College Design Competition Shortlist Announced

Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) recently announced the results of the first stage of the design competition to re-program and re-design Oriel College, Oxford’s social spaces. The shortlist, a fascinating cross-section of British architectural talent ranging from the contextual to the contemporary, is made-up of established practices with extensive portfolios. More than sixty teams submitted Expressions of Interest for the competition, which was launched in late June. The shortlisted teams include: AL_A, Allies and Morrison, Caruso St John Architects, Panter Hudspith Architects, and Wright & Wright Architects. More images and information after the break.

Competition organiser, Malcolm Reading said:
‘The standard of entries was of exceptional quality – including many of the best-known UK practices and some also from overseas. The College is very pleased with the response. The brief for the project is extremely challenging because of the constraints of the site and the ambition to re-frame social and functional connections for future generations. A distinctive combination of competence and creativity was required; and − I am delighted to say − is provided by the shortlist.’

An open day for the competitors will be held in August and second-stage submissions are due on Friday 20th September. The winner will be announced following the Jury interviews in October 2013.
