Today we celebrate the 92nd birthday of Pritzker Prize laureate Kevin Roche. Known for his progressive sense of aesthetic and vast body of work, Roche has headed numerous projects of varying program and scale as the design principal of his firm Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates.
Born in 1922 in Ireland, Roche was educated as an architect in Europe before coming to the US in 1948 to become a student of Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He was soon after recruited by Eero Saarinen’s firm, eventually becoming principal design associate. Following Saarinen’s death, Roche took over the firm alongside John Lacey and John Dinkeloo. They completed many of Saarinen’s unfinished projects, including The Gateway Arch of St. Louis, and the TWA terminal of JFK airport. Roche is perhaps most famous for designing the Knights of Columbus building. During his career, he has garnered numerous awards including the Pritzker, the AIA Gold Medal, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal. He continues to practice to this day.
